The acclaimed filmmaker Imtiaz Ali is all set to make a biopic of legendary actress Madhubala. In order to make his path smooth and avoid any hindrance, the Jab We Met director has even acquired the rights of the late actress’ life from her family, according to a media report. The biopic can either take the form of a film or a web series.

“He has acquired the rights from the family who owns a company called Madhubala Ventures Pvt. Ltd vide a Life Story Rights Assignment Agreement for the Hindi language only, under his company Window Seat Films LLP,” an industry source said.

It has been raining biopics in Bollywood. While this year saw The Accidental Prime Minister, Manikarnikaa, Super 30, Thackeray, and others, the next year has quite a number of biographical dramas – Vidya Balan starrer Shakuntala Devi, Kabir Khan’s ’83, Meghna Gulzar’s Chhapaak, Dharma Productions’ Gunjan Saxena- The Kargil Girl, Shershaah on Captain Vikram Batra, Vicky Kaushal as Field Marshall Sam Manekshaw and Parineeti Chopra as badminton player Saina Nehwa are some awaited biopics.

No matter how saturated the Bollywood gets with biopics, a film on the life of Madhubala will definitely be welcomed with open arms by the audience. Born as Mumtaz Jahan Begum Dehalvi, Madubala started as a child artist then made her debut as the heroine at the age of 14 in Neel Kamal opposite debutante Raj Kapoor.

Her life was full of struggle, pain, stardom, love affair, tragedy and everything that an interesting biopic would require. While there is no official announcement if the biopic would be a film or web series, looking at her tumultuous life and experiences, it is difficult to imagine to sum up her life in a film. It must require either a web series or a film in two or three parts. But she deserves the big screen.

As much attention she received for her beauty and work, she garnered equal attention attention for her personal life – love affair with Dilip Kumar, unexpected marriage with Kishore Kumar, ventricular septal defect (a hole in her heart), her strict father and many other things.

While Madhubala is still remembered but in a career spanning 22 years, she never received an award unlike her contemporaries Meena Kumari, Nargis, Nutan, Waheeda Rahman. She received only one Filmfare nomination for Mughal-e-Azam. Even today she is remembered as “Anarkali”.
