IMTIAZ ALI COMES OUT WITH SHORT FILM ON DOGS

Filmmaker Imtiaz Ali is likely to make a film based on the life of popular Punjabi singer, songwriter, composer late Amar Singh Chamkila, according to a report in Mid Day. The director has bought the rights of the movie in a joint venture with Reliance Entertainment.

Chamkila rose to fame in the ‘80s with his songs which had controversial themes like extra-marital relationships, drug abuse, drinking, hot-temperament of Punjabi men. He had the audience divided with one section calling his songs vulgar while the other section called them a true reflection of the Punjab’s society. He was killed, along with his wife Amarjot and two members of his band, in 1988 by a gang of armed young men.

A source close to the development told the news daily, “The makers have obtained permission from the singer’s family to translate his life story on celluloid. While the scripting is underway, the makers are already tossing around names for the male lead.”

The source further added, “Imtiaz will be creatively involved in the film, and will train his focus on it following the release of his Valentine’s Day offering that features Kartik and Sara Ali Khan. The director too has yet to be finalised.”

Kartik Aaryan, who is starring in Ali’s next directorial untitled film with Sara Ali Khan, is being tipped as the frontrunner for the lead role. Ayushmann Khurrana is another actor the makers are seriously considering for the part.
