Till date, several Indian movies have gone to Oscars, ‘Mother India’, ‘Salaam Bombay!’ and ‘Lagaan’ have even made it to the top five lists but none has won the Academy Award yet. And this year also the record continues.

India’s official entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the Oscars 2018, Rima Das’s ‘Village Rockstar’ is out of the race. It is an Assamese movie set in director Rima Das’ own village of Chhaygaon in Assam.

It is a story of poor but amazing children. The synopsis of the trailer reads, “A 10-year-old girl living in a remote village in northeast India fights against stereotypes and poverty to pursue her dream of owning a guitar and forming a rock band.”

Another movie directed by Norwegian-Pakistani director, starring Indian actors, Maria Mozhdah, Adil Hussain, Ekavali Khanna, ‘What Will People Say’ is out of the race as well. The film features Norway based Pakistani immigrant’s teenage daughter who has an affair with a local boy.

The synopsis of the trailer reads, “Sixteen-year-old Nisha lives a double life. At home with her family she is the perfect Pakistani daughter, but when out with her friends, she is a normal Norwegian teenager. When her father catches her in bed with her boyfriend, Nisha’s two worlds brutally collide. To set an example, Nisha’s parents decide to kidnap her and place her with relatives in Pakistan. Here, in a country she has never been to before, Nisha is forced to adapt to her parents’ culture.”

According to the official Oscars website, “Nine films will advance to the next round of voting in the Foreign Language Film category for the 91st Academy Awards. Eighty-seven films had originally been considered in the category.”

The list of selected Foreign Language Films are:

“Birds of Passage” from Colombia
“The Guilty” from Denmark
“Never Look Away” from Germany
“Shoplifters” from Japan
“Ayka” from Kazakhstan
“Capernaum” from Lebanon
“Roma” from Mexico
“Cold War” from Poland
“Burning” from South Korea

Nominations for the 91st Oscars will be announced on January 22, 2019, and the Oscar ceremony will be held on February 24, 2019.
