Canadian born filmmaker and environmentalist James Cameron has received Order of Canada, which is the second highest honour of the country after the Order of Merit in the system of decorations.

According to a report by CBS News, Cameron has been included in the Canada’s New Year’s Honours List for his “outstanding contributions to the filmmaking industry as a writer, producer and director.”

The Titanic director said, “It’s out of the blue and I don’t know whose idea it was but, look, I am definitely honoured.” Further adding from his home in Santa Barbara, California: “I wish I had done more in my career actually in Canada, but I am sort of making up for lost time with investments in the Prairie provinces, especially in Saskatchewan around the Saskatoon area.”

Cameron is a vegan and an outspoken environmentalist who often talks about climate change, focusing on changing our food habits and giving up on meat as it’s one of the major causes for carbon emission.

“Nobody wants to talk about the food business but it’s the quickest way for us to turn down the thermostat on global climate. If we can make money in the plant protein area, then other people will do it and that will foster more products that make it easier for people to transition from meat and dairy into a whole-food, plant-based diet,” the 65 year old filmmaker said.

Cameron is gearing up to release two sequels to his highly successful film Avatar, which are slated to hit the theaters in 2021 and 2023.
