Veteran Bengali Actor Swarup Dutta passes away on Wednesday morning at a city hospital in Kolkata. Dutta was 78 and was already suffering from age-related ailments from quite some time.

Dutta was survived by his wife and son Sharad Dutta, who is also an actor. After becoming unconscious Dutta was hospitalized on Saturday and passed away at 6:10 in the morning.

Actors presenting their condolences through tweets also write that the Golden Era of Bengali Cinema, which was represented by such stalwarts is fading away.

Swarup Dutta was known for showcasing versatility in his works of the 1960s and 70s. His first movie was Tapan Sinha’s Apanjan (1968). The film was set in the backdrop of the political turmoil in the 1960s in West Bengal. Dutta’s other works include Sagina Mahato, Harmonium, Pita Putra and Maa O Meye.
