Leila is a web series on Netflix that has been in controversy since its release. The series is based on Prayag Akbar’s novel of the same name. Leila has been directed by Deepa Mehta, Shanker Raman, and Pawan Kumar.
Leila is set in a dystopian future governed by a totalitarian ruler Mr.Joshi, with whose guidance the laws of Aryavarta have been created. Leila is set in 2047 when India as a nation ceases to exist and we see a state of chaos and water scarcity.
Even though there has been a lot of controversy around Leila, but there are still a lot of people who are watching it and have probably shown love to it as well. There have been recurrent flashbacks in the series, reminding Shalini of her past life that was wrapped in a bubble, making it difficult for some of the viewers to comprehend.
The ending of the series has also left the audience perplexed because everything that happened in the final episode, happened in a rush. We see Bhanu handing over the bulb to Shalini that contains some poisonous gas since she is invited to the Skydome function to give a speech. We also get to know that Rao’s staff is among those who never get frisked. Leila has been brainwashed and she doesn’t even recognize her mother Shalini.
Due to Shalini’s haste behavior and the urge to unite with her daughter, she takes a step that might put an end to her life or her daughter’s as well. Shalini expects that her confession about the bulb and the poisonous gas that it contains can help her to reunite with her daughter and she can also save everyone’s life. Unfortunately, we don’t see that happening anytime and Shalini is not left with much of a choice. The episode is ended at a cliffhanger, where Shalini is seen to be putting pressure on the bulb and also, Bhanu has been taken away by Mr. Joshi’s guard.
