Oscar winning actor Leonardo William DiCaprio is one of the largest environmental activists in the American film industry. He had founded an environmental foundation named after himself back in 1998. The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation works to conserve wildlife and oceans all over the world.
This foundation had recently funded a firm established to discover new wildlife species in the world. The Taxon Expeditions was an extension of this firm which had ventured into the Maliau Basin in Borneo in search of indigenous or rare living creatures. The expedition has successfully returned with the discovery of three entirely new species of beetles, now to be researched upon by mankind. One of these beetles was found in the bottom of a waterfall in a natural reserve and was named the Grouvellinus leonardodicaprioi.
This Grouvellinus leonardodicaprioi is a tiny black beetle which was named after the founder of the organization which led to its discovery. Iva Njunjic, the founder of the Taxon Expeditions expressed their gratitude towards Leonardo DiCaprio and also explained that even though the newly categorized beetle did not possess any Oscar winning characteristics, in the process of discovering new creatures, every being is important.
There have been various other celebrities like Bob Marley, Kate Winslet, and Béyonce who have had other wildlife creatures named after them. However, out of all of them, only Mr. DiCaprio has played an active part in the unearthing of the being.
