The much anticipated Aquaman trailer was released during the San Diego Comin Con last night. Aquaman is an upcoming American superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name. It is directed by James Wan, with a screenplay by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, from a story by Wan, Beall, and Geoff Johns. It stars Jason Momoa as the title character, with Amber Heard, Willem Dafoe, Patrick Wilson, Dolph Lundgren, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Nicole Kidman in supporting roles.

It is the third live-action theatrical film featuring the title character, following Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Justice League (2017). This movie will be the first full-length feature film centred around the character.

“I want our film to be a little different, a bit more unique, so to speak,” director James Wan (Furious 7) told the crowd at Comic-Con. “So my movie in some ways plays more like a science fiction fantasy film than a traditional superhero movie.” “I think a big part of that [appeal] is the world he lives in, the underwater world, and especially for kids of the Golden Age of comic books, the whole idea of his underwater world and Atlantis is really exciting and plays to a fantasy fulfillment.”

From the beginning, aquaman was mocked and considered tricky to pull of at the big screen. Considering everything that has been said abut the character, it became important for the makers to cast someone who would bring seriousness to this character. And they stood up to it by casting former Game of Thrones star Jason Momoa.

“It was such a brilliant casting move,” Wan says. “If here’s a superhero that most people like to make fun of, the very sheer fact you have Jason Momoa, the jokiness goes right out the window.”
