A still from Aamis

The upsetting side of ‘Love’ is that it disturbs the set and established patterns of our day to day life as we obsess over someone, something…that object of our desire. Bhaskar Hazarika’s film ‘Aamis’ takes you through various such stages beginning with attraction, then love, and then unexpectedly hitting you hard at the end. The film begins beautifully giving us insights from Nirmali and Sumon’s life, the two main characters. Nirmali, a pediatrician married to a husband who stays away often. Her life revolves around her clinic and her son. On the other side, we have Sumon, a Ph.D. student researching different meat-eating habits in Eastern India.

A series of events follows how both of them meet and bond over similar topics, which is specifically meat here. They seemingly fall in love which unexpectedly leads us to the horror of the film as it changes the whole narrative making you go gaga over the film. The favorite part being the way how the character’s psyche plays a vital role here. During one of their meat dates, Suman notices a tiny food particle on Nirmala’s chin. He reaches out with his hand, she leans in. But just as they are about to touch, Nirmala suddenly becomes conscious of her social position as a ‘respectable’ married mother. That’s where we see the two different sides of Love…a hypothetical state. We are confronted with the upsetting side of love and the horror of Cravings.
