A still from Searching

There’s no doubt that the recently released Malayalam film ‘C U Soon’ gave us a unique cinema viewing experience. The film chose the virtual form of storytelling which was quite new in the Indian Cinema. C U Soon was shot in lockdown and was even cinematographed virtually, the film being a thriller explored numerous themes be it relationships, etc in the age of the internet. And even after watching the film for a couple of times, we can’t get enough of it, we are completely in awe with the new style of filmmaking and presenting stories.

So, today we will be introducing a similar film to that of C U Soon, the 2018 film Searching directed by Aneesh Chaganty. The film too uses tech devices as a narrative format. A thriller that takes place completely on-screens will make you fall in love with the unique style of filmmaking and storytelling. The film opens up connecting you to the virtual world, portraying how deeply our daily life is involved with the tech devices and applications. And slowly a seemingly peaceful life turns into a tragedy and at each step, the virtual connectivity plays a major role.

A still from Searching

The story follows David (John Cho) who lost his wife to lymphoma and now his only family is his 16-year-old daughter Margot (Michelle La) and they both grieve for their loss, but not with one another. The problem arises when one night, David goes to sleep and wakes up to the worst nightmare i.e three missed calls, all made in the middle of the night, and the sound of Margot’s phone going straight to voicemail. The conflict is still not in the frame as there are various interpretations of it and circumstances lead to David tracing his missing daughter.

The film unfolds like a thriller virtually and is really engaging. The frames are interesting and will give you goosebumps at times as the third wall diminishes in here. Searching is a must-watch if you haven’t yet.
