A still from Uyare

While I was watching Chhapaak trailer on YouTube, in the comment box many people compared it with Uyare, a Malayalam film and that’s how I was introduced to this beautiful yet horrifying film which is about an acid attack survivor and it takes you off from the popular male-centric narrative of Love Failure and we see through the perspective of a woman which is more than horrifying. And this is really new, we have never been made aware of the reality through the eyes of a woman, in the movies at least.

Most of the movies we have seen highlighting Love Failure are from the pov of a man. His depression, alcoholism, and violence. During this time, the woman is held responsible for his self-destruction. However this 2019 film, Uyare takes your eyes off from this popular narrative and makes you aware of how the situations are more horrifying for a woman when she’s dealing with a man who is over-obsessed with her.

A scene from Uyare

It’s the story of Pallavi Raveendran (Parvathy Thiruvothu), who is an intelligent and ambitious woman aiming to conquer big goals in her life. But at the same time, she is trapped in a toxic relationship with Govind (Asif Ali). And she doesn’t want to walk away from it as she feels she owes it to him as he helped her during an emotional mess in her school days. Pallavi is well aware of the fact that Govind goes too far with his obsessiveness and she even hides things from him so as not to upset him. But all along, she justifies his controlling behavior as love.

Uyare is beautifully painted on canvas from the perspective of Pallavi. Not only does she find good people like Vishal (Tovino Thomas) to stand by her, she refuses to give up on her ambitions. She remains confident about her abilities. In the end, she has moved on from her past and is finally flying free of all the barriers and ready for a new take-off in this beautiful world.
