  1. Ilzaam (1986)

Producer Pahlaj Nihalani wanted Madhuri opposite Govinda in the film after watching Abodh but Rikku objected since Govinda was a newcomer and signed her for two other films instead. The role of Aarti then went to Neelam who became a star overnight with this film.

2. Sadaa Suhagan (1986):

Madhuri signed and shot this film for 3 days. She was advised to drop the film after Subhash Ghai signed her. Afterwards Anuradha Patel stepped into the role of Madhu but it did nothing much for her since the film mainly revolved around Rekha and Jeetendra.

3. Diljalaa (1987):

Owing to some differences, director Bapu wanted to replace Farha with Madhuri but producer Romesh Sharma was unwilling to do so since he wanted Farha in the film. Eventually Bapu relented and warmed up to her after she performed an emotional scene in the film.

4. Chandni (1989)

Madhuri was offered the cameo role of Vinod Khanna’s late girlfriend Devika in the film. However, Madhuri rejected the offer since her role was rather small compared to Sridevi. Later, Juhi stepped into her role. The song ‘Lagi Aaj Sawan’ became a hit.

5. Doodh Ka Karz (1990)

Madhuri rejected the film because she found the story ridiculous. Another report claimed that Anil advised her not to do the snake film, causing tension between Anil and Jackie. Later the role of Reshma went to Neelam.

6. Vishwatma (1992)

Director Rajiv Rai offered the role of Kusum to Madhuri, but she refused since her role in his previous film Tridev wasn’t good enough. Then Divya Bharti accepted the film and became a major sensation in Bollywood. Her song ‘Saat Samundar’ became a chartbuster.

7. Deewana (1992)

Madhuri was the first choice for the role of Kaajal. Director Raj Kanwar wanted to work with her but when things didn’t work out, Divya replaced her in the film and became a top star. The film along with its soundtrack was one of the highest grossers of the 90s.

8. Antham/Drohi (1992)

Director Ram Gopal Varma had travelled all the way to Mumbai from Hyderabad to sign Madhuri for this bilingual film. But her secretary informed him that her dates weren’t available for six months. Urmila was then cast in the role of Bhavna.

9. Darr (1993)

Madhuri was the first choice for the role of Kiran, which was written keeping her in mind. However, Madhuri backed out since she had date problems. Later Yash Chopra offered the role to Juhi Chawla, which she accepted. Juhi entered the top league with this film.

10. Damini (1993)

Madhuri was offered the title role but couldn’t do it citing serious date issues. The role then went to Meenakshi Seshadri who gave one of her finest performances in this film. She earned wide critical acclaim and accolades for her role.

11. Baazigar (1993)

Abbas-Mustan apparently offered Madhuri 25 lakhs to play the role of Seema, but she did not want to play second fiddle. Eventually Shilpa Shetty stepped in and debuted with this film. All the songs became very popular and Shilpa was appreciated for her role.

12. 1942: A Love Story (1994)

Madhuri was offered the role of Rajjo and the song ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha’ was conceptualised with her in mind. However, she didn’t have the dates. And when she did, Vidhu didn’t cooperate and replaced her with Manisha instead. The film flopped miserably.

13. Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995)

Madhuri was offered the role of Kiran in this ‘Kramer vs. Kramer’ adaptation. However, she didn’t have dates available as usual. Manisha Koirala landed the role and earned several accolades for her performance. The songs also became quite popular.

14. Agni Sakshi (1996)

Madhuri was approached for the role of Shivangi but turned it down, as she was busy shooting for Yaraana, which was also a remake of ‘Sleeping with the Enemy’. Later Manisha was cast. The film was a huge hit and the song ‘O Yaara Dil Lagana’ became popular.

15. Khamoshi (1996)

Madhuri was the first choice for Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s directorial debut. However, either she found the story depressing or she had date issues. The role of Annie then went to Manisha. The film received critical acclaim and the soundtrack became very popular.
