The trailer of Rani Mukerji starrer Mardaani 2 was recently released. While the trailer promises an edge-of-the-seat gripping thriller, it also received some backlash from the local residents of Kota in Rajasthan where the film is set in.

Following the protest of the locals that the film shows their city in a bad light, the makers of Mardaani 2 have decided to make certain changes in the trailer. Bollywood Hungama has reported that the makers would remove the reference of Kota from the trailer.

The director Gopi Puthran said that they realized the trailer mentions it is inspired by true events and is based in Kota which could be open to miscommunication. Yash Raj Films has now decided to remove the true events claim from the film so that there is no further room for misinterpretation.

Mardaani 2 focuses on the rise in violent crimes by juveniles in India. Rani Mukerji is seen chasing a 21 year old serial rapist who systematically targets young girls and brutally murders them. All the events are shown to be taking place in the city of Kota in Rajasthan. Kota is a well known hub of IIT coaching institutions and attracts thousands of aspiring students every year.

The local residents were unhappy with the trailer and complained that the trailer showcases the city and IIT tuitions in a bad light. Demanding that Kota’s name should be removed from the film, various social groups from the city went to Lok Sabha Speaker and Kota MP Om Birla to register their process. The politician said, “I will definitely discuss the issue with the concerned people. Maligning a city’s name through cinema is not acceptable. The incident on which the film is based is also fictional. So for a fictional story taking the name of a city is not right.”

Mardaani 2 is the second installment of 2014 release Mardaani which was a major box office and critical success. The film will see Rani Mukerjee reprising her role of tough cop Shivani Shivaji Rao.

Produced by Aditya Chopra under Yash Raj Films, the film is slated to release on 13 December where it will be clashing with Emraan Hashmi’s The Body.
