‘Khoya Khoya Chand’ from the 1960 film Kala Bazar where Alka (Waheeda Rehman) seems like a silent moon and Raghuvir (Dev Anand) is expressing his love for her. The beautifully shot song with the effect is of the vast sky and the unruly clouds moving around. Sung by Mohammed Rafi, this song is a beauty in itself.
The song channeled the emotion of remembrance as Raghu’s character wonders how everything would be better if she was also with him. Many songs including this one as well have used the Moon as a witness to the hero’s romance or romantic conversation with his lover. Overall, the 1960’s version of the song highlighted extreme love.
And after almost five decades how the same music and song molded in a different situation altogether in the 2011 film Shaitan. With a new version of Khoya Khoya Chand director, Bejoy Nambiar places it in an action sequence that is filled with extreme violence. And quite surprisingly this song adds a feel to that thrilling scene in the film. Khoya Khoya Chand here might interpret the lost innocence of five youths after they got involved in a hit and run case, further leading their lives into the world of crime. This version was recreated by Mikey McCleary and was sung by Suman Sridhar.
