Created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher and starring Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Devi, this Netflix series about the complicated life of an Indian American Teenager is hilariously refreshing.

The story revolves around a teenager who has a very difficult first year of High school. Devi tries to cope up with the tragic death of her father and move forward.

Like any other teenager, she has several dreams, she wants a boyfriend, wants to get invited to a party, not to get wasted, but because she wants the opportunity to coolly decline (haha), wants to go to Princeton.

She has an amazing group of friends(Ramona Young as Eleanor and Lee Rodriguez as Fabiola) they are thoughtful and loving.

A caring and supporting mother(played by Poorna Jagannathan), who doesn’t always click well with her daughter, often misunderstanding or misreading her and setting expectations that chafe Devi.

The show has the perfect blend of drama and humor. Not only do we fall in love with characters, but also enjoy Devi’s Indian-ness.

Her Indian-ness is something she owns happily in one moment and then ditches as quickly as possible in others. It also plays a vital part in the show.

The Indian Functions that she has to attend which she would rather skip, or her mother persuading her to wear a saree on a Durga puja rather than a kurta with jeans are some of the intricate details that the show has wielded deftly.

Mindy Kaling has done an excellent job with this teenage drama show, and it is a treat to watch. If you are looking for a simple, soothing show to watch over on the weekend, then this is the show for you.
