We all know that Media is responsible for altering our perception of reality. But what can we do? We have to rely on them as they are the mediator. Not all of us can do our own research. Hence, media is shaping our perspectives from a long time back. The recently released Amazon Prime show, Paatal Lok provides us with an insight from the working of media, also with a detailed overview of Indian Politics going hand in hand with the world of Crime.

Loosely based on Tarun Tejpal’s ‘The Story of My Assasins,’ the show drives us through thrilling nine episodic saga from the view of outer Jamuna Paar Inspector Hathi Ram Chaudhary (Jaideep Ahlawat). The story follows us from Hathi Ram landing in an investigation of four criminals – Vishal Tyagi (Abhishek Banerjee), Tope Singh (Jagjeet Sandhu), Kabir M. (Aasif Khan), and Cheeni (Mairembam Ronaldo Singh) caught by Delhi Police for a failed assassination attempt of a well known TV journalist Sanjeev Mehra (Neeraj Kabi).

The case seems to be a golden opportunity for him as he struggles with his low key career, disappointed with himself. The one point I would like to mention here is the indepth detailing of characters and it is the primary reason which makes this show a gripping watch. From Hathi Ram’s childhood life, his unsettling chemistry with his son, we are provided with all the story arcs possible.

Coming back to the story, as it paces further and Hathi Ram goes deep within the countryside investigating the case, truth unfolds in front of him and he realizes, “Grass is not always greener on the other side.” What we see everyday on news channels, might not be the complete truth or even maybe completely false. We never know. The story brings out a lot of conspiracy theories which goes within the so called flawed system which is actually not.

Coming to the performances, Jaideep Ahlawat our protagonist suits perfectly in the shoes of Hathi Ram Chaudhary. Abhishek Banerjee who plays Vishal Tyagi aka Hathauda Tyagi is one of the finest dark characters we have right now. The man whom we last saw in Dream Girl and Bala playing a comic character has completely transformed himself into a rebellious villain and he comes out as a surprise at the end of this show. Every character is well defined by the writers and well performed by the actors.

Written by Sudip Sharma, Directed by Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy, this show has already made up to the list of finest Indian shows. Even if you’re not a movie buff, I would highly recommend you watching Paatal Lok, streaming on Amazon Prime.
