Former CBFC Chairperson and producer Pahlaj Nihalani is shocked by a Parliamentary Committee’s decision to question director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on Padmavati before the censor board can view the film. He claimed the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had also “bullied” him during his tenure. “By all means, the Parliamentary Committee has every right to question Bhansali or any other filmmaker. But only after the Central Board of Film Certification views and certifies the film. “By questioning him before the censor certificate, you are challenging the authority of the CBFC as the final arbitrary body to decide the fate of a film,” said Nihalani. Nihalani feels the CBFC seems to have lost its authority. “During my tenure, I was bullied by the I&B Ministry into taking decisions. “Now it’s a free-for all. Any and every governing body can question a film. Where does that leave the CBFC?” As for Padmavati, Nihalani wonders where the film’s persecution stops. “To how many committees is Bhansali answerable? And where does this end? “Why is one of India’s best filmmakers being made to explain himself over and over again? And why is the CBFC not taking steps to clear the air once and for all,” questioned Nihalani, whose own tenure as the CBFC chief was dogged by controversies. Padmavati, based on the life of legendary queen Padmini of Chittor, has been in controversy for a year now with various Rajput groups like Shri Rajput Karni Sena accusing Sanjay Leela Bhansali of distorting history and playing with the sentiments of people. From demands to ban the film to open death threats, things have only gotten uglier for the team of Padmavati.

The former Central Board of Film Certification and producer Pahlaj Nihalani says that he has been bullied by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting during his tenure. Pahlaj says that he is in shock that how can the Parliamentary Committee’s decision to question the director Sanjay Leela Bhansali on his upcoming Indian Period movie titled ‘Padmavati‘ before the censor board can view the film.

However, he has claimed that during his time Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had also bullied him at his tenure. He says that the committee has all the rights to question the director of the movie Sanjay Leela Bhansali or any other filmmaker but they only have the right when the Central Board of Film Certification views and certify the movie.

He says that if they are questioning Sanjay Leela Bhansali before the censor issue the certificate then it means that they are challenging the authorities of the Central Board of Film Certification however, he knows that the final arbitrary body decides the fate of a movie. All these things seem like the Central Board of Film Certification have lost its authority. He said that during his time he was being bullied by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting into taking the decisions.

He thinks that now it is free for all any and every government body can question the movie. Where does that leave the Central Board of Film Certification? as specifically talking about the movie ‘Padmavati’ he wonders where the movie’s persecution stops. He feels that to how many committees does the Sanjay Leela Bhansali has to answerable and where will this be going to end?

He fails to understand that why does the India’s best filmmaker being made to explain himself over and over again? He even said that why does the Central Board of Film Certification is not taking a step to clear all the controversies which are revolving around the movie ‘Padmavati’ once and for all. Pahlaj has own tenure as the Central Board of Film Certification was dogged by the controversies.

The movie ‘Padmavati’ was based on the life of the legendary queen of Rani Padmini of Chittor, and the movie has been in the controversy for a year now and this has been the controversy with the various Rajput groups like Shri Rajput Karni Sena and they are accusing the filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali because they believe that Bhansali has distorted the history and has played with the sentiments of the people. They believe that in the movie Sanjay has shown the dream sequence of the Rani Padmini along with the Muslim Sultan Alauddin Khilji. However, the makers of the movie have clarified that there is no such dream sequence and all the reports related to this are untrue and are baseless.
