The upcoming movie Pati Patni Aur Woh created a lot buzz when its trailer came out earlier this month. While the audience found the trailer genuinely funny, a certain portion of it did not go down well with the people. And that portion was Kartik Aaryan’s monologue about the lack of sex in his life where he goes too far and makes a joke on marital rape.

He says, “Biwi se sex maang lein, toh hum bhikaari. Biwi ko sex mana kar dein, toh hum atyachaari aur kisi tarah jugaad laga ke uss se sex haasil kar lein na toh balaatkaari bhi hum hain.” (If we ask the wife for sex, we are beggars. If we say no to the wife for sex we are tormentors and if somehow we manage to get sex from her we are rapists).

Soon after the controversy erupted, reports started pouring in that the portion might be edited out. Finally, the film’s producer Juno Chopra has confirmed that the offensive part has been removed from the film. Pati Patni Aur Woh is a remake of Juno’s grandfather BR Chopra’s 1978 film of the same name and the producer said that he respects people’s sentiments.

Juno told Mumbai Mirror, “Both my grandfather and my father Ravi Chopra have made socially relevant films and while I have not made one yet, I believe in doing the right thing. Respecting people’s sentiments we have edited out the lines.”

Juno Chopra also said that the idea of remaking this film came from Akshay Kumar. “He said that the story of Pati Patni Aur Woh is still relevant. Karan Johar, too, has always been fond of the title. Though I would have loved to work with Akshay Kumar in this case he only shared the idea with us,” he said.

Directed by Mudassar Aziz, Pati Patni Aur Woh is remake of BR Chopra’s 1978 film of the same name which starred Sanjeev Kapoor, Vidya Sinha, and Ranjeeta Kaur in the lead roles. Kartik Aaryan will be stepping into Sanjeev Kumar’s shoes as “Pati” while Bhumi Pednekar will be portraying Vidya Sinha’s character of “Patni” and Ananya Panday will be seen in Ranjeeta Kaur’s role of secretary, “Woh”.

The original film is a humorous take on extra marital affairs. The story revolves around a man who lies to his secretary that his wife is terminally ill in order to gain her sympathy and get closer to her. His plans are foiled when his wife finds out about his deceit. The remake will be a modern take on the same subject.

The film is slated to be theatrically released in India on 6 December 2019.
