There always comes a time in our life when we have to take some serious decisions and during which we are completely on the track of confusion, and some decisions are not to be risked keeping in mind the outcomes. And we all go through such situations a lot of time in our life.

Similarly, the 1974 film Rajnigandha revolves around a girl who is bound to make tough choices relating to her career and her personal life. Set in 70s, the story has a subtle theme which talks about the tension growing between men and women in an evolving India. Tension in terms of equality, opportunities, etc.

A still from Rajnigandha

Through Rajnigandha, Basu Chatterjee created a world in which the Indian woman occupied centre stage as an independent and thinking individual. Adding to it was her romantic dilemma and her struggle to join a well paid work force. Deepa, here deals with all of these along with her past. She recalls and tries to reconsider it.

In the film, people and city share their own characteristics which I found pretty interesting to analyze. In awe with the classic Indian Cinema, I am in love with these stories aiming for a deep research on human behavior. The same goes with Basu Chatterjee’s Rajnigandha.
