If you have watched Shuddh Desi Romance, you will know that the whole film sums up beautifully with the one song ‘Chanchal Mann Ati Random,’ from where the story actually begins. So let’s start off from the first scene of the film where Raghu (Sushant Singh Rajput) a groom to be seems to be confused and talks about relationships and marriages and the way Indian society is bounded with it so closely. Raghu is set to marry Tara (Vaani Kapoor) a girl he met and approved of marriage. But just while arriving at the wedding destination, he realizes that he isn’t ready to marry yet, and he explains his story to Gayatri (Parineeti Chopra). So, he decides to run away from his marriage, leaving Tara waiting.
Now the next scene, we as an Indian audience would expect Tara to cry or feel betrayed. But breaking off from the typical movies, the writer wants to show something more real, so when Tara gets to know that Raghu has eloped, she just sits in a chair nearby and asks, Ek Thanda Milega? which also has an explanation just at the pre climax of the movie. Raghu is always confused as he’s unsure what his heart wants which is justified when he says, ‘mera apne dil pe control nahi hai, jiska dil pe control nahi hota, uska life pe bhi control nahi hota’. He runs away from marriage, thinking it would end his free life. . .
On the other side, there’s Gayatri who has been in multiple relationships, she is emotionally drained out of word ‘love’, thereby she runs away from marriage too. We aren’t shown the back stories of any of her previous relationships, so her side of the story remains open ended, whether she was the right person in those relations or the wrong. There’s a lot of complications in both the relationships, but the film is quite a real depiction, and which actually talks about live in relationships, though the film was never depicted as the one highlighting it.
