In a recent interview with Vogue, Rihanna recollected some memories of her experience at the MTV Video Music Awards, and not all of it was positive. One of the most well-known events of that night in 2016 was when fellow artist Drake dedicated his love towards Rihanna as he stood at the podium to award her with the honorary Video Vanguard Award. In her statement with the interviewer, Rihanna told the Vogue that waiting for Drake to finish his ‘heartfelt’ speech before giving out the award was the most “uncomfortable” moment of the night.

Rihanna elaborated that she was not somebody who thrived on an excess of compliments and that too much praise and flattery was something that she did not like at all. She confessed that she “[does] not like to be put on blast.” Hence, Drake showering compliments onto the artist, calling her loving phrases like herself being “captivating from day one” and confessing that he had been in love with her since he was 22, did not have the exact reaction within Rihanna’s heart that Drake might have expected.

Rihanna moves on to describe their present relationship as not exactly ‘friendly’ anymore. However, she elaborated that even though they weren’t friends anymore per se, they were not exactly enemies either. Ending on an ambiguous note, Rihanna confirmed to Vogue that their current status might sound complicated, but “It is what it is”.
