Rima Das’s Assamese feature film ‘Bulbul Can Sing’ won two more international awards. The film was premiered at Toronto International Film Festival 2018 and won special mention at BERLINALE 2019 in Generation 14 Plus.

Rima got Best Director award at the prestigious 2019 Dublin International Film Festival’s Dublin Film Critics Circle (DFCC) and ‘Someone to Watch’ award at the Cleveland International Film Festival (CIFF).

According to CIFF, this award is given to “mid-career filmmakers who are rising stars in international filmmaking.”

Rima Das says, “Both Village Rockstars and Bulbul Can Sing have strong women characters at its center. It’s wonderful that the critics and audience alike are very receptive to such stories. It also goes on to reiterate that it doesn’t matter whether the film is helmed by a male or female filmmaker. I strongly believe that ‘Content is Queen’ and I would like to see more and more women in the industry make a name for themselves and open windows for fellow women in the process.”

The coming-of-age movie is just another addition to this genre in Bollywood. The film explores the life of love, and friendship from the point of view of a teenager from Assam. The film was shot in just 60 days.

It won Golden Gateway of India for Best Film and Silver Screen Award for the category Best Performance – Asian Feature Film to Manabendra Das.

Rima is already a National Award-winning filmmaker, who also manages Mumbai-based production house, Flying River Films and supports local and independent filmmakers in the region through her company.
