Padma Vibhushan recipient Shivkumar Sharma dies at the age of 84 on Tuesday due to a heart attack. His secretary Dinesh gave the news to the Press Trust of India. The artist took his last breath at his Pali Hill residence in Mumbai. Born in Jammu and Kashmir, the legendary santoor player made the instrument popular globally. Prime Minister Narendra Modi mourns the demise of the gem of India we lost yesterday. Have a look at the PM’s emotional tweet.

“Our cultural world is poorer with the demise of Pandit Shivkumar Sharma Ji. He popularised the Santoor at a global level. His music will continue to enthral the coming generations. I fondly remember my interactions with him. Condolences to his family and admirers. Om Shanti.” wrote the Prime Minister.

After taking santoor to different heights, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma also composed music for Bollywood, beginning with a background score for Shantaram’s Jhanak Jhanak Baje Payal.

Conferred with the prestigious Sangeet Natak Academy Award in 1986, and with the Padma Shri in 1991, Pandit Ji was also awarded the Padma Vibhushan in 2001.

The legendary artist recorded his first solo in the 1960s and went on to create great music with flutist Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia and guitarist Brij Bhushan Kabra. He also gave music for Yash Chopra’s films, including Lamhe, Chandani and Silsila.
