Satyajit Ray’s fantasy adventure ‘Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne’ is all set to return to theatres in the animated version titled ‘GGBB: Goopi Gawaiya Bagha Bajaiya’. The classic tale, returning after 50 years, is directed by Shilpa Ranade. The animated film had its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013. The film is scheduled to be released on 01 March 2019.

It is based on the characters Goopy and Bagha created by director Satyajit Ray’s grandfather Upendra Kishore Roychowdhury, who also wrote the Hindi translation of the story.

Ray’s son, filmmaker Sandip Ray loved Shilpa’s version of the story. He also revealed that the original film came into being when he asked his father to make something for children. He said, “I am still fascinated by Goopi and Bagha. It is such a nice story that has stood the test of time.”

Director Shilpa Ranade said, “It has been attempted by cinematic icons but it is such a heartwarming story that you eventually get over that baggage.”

“Life has come a full circle; it was Gulzar sir’s story that motivated me to direct an animated film on these iconic characters,” she concluded.

The trailer of the film will be unveiled by Gulzar soon.

The original is the story of two talentless musicians who meet after being exiled by King’s order when they disturbed king’s sleep with their terrible music. Later they attract a group of ghosts who are fascinated by their music and receive boons from them.
