Actor Shreya Dhanwanthary, who made her debut in Hindi films with Why Cheat India earlier this year, will now star in Hansal Mehta’s crime thriller Scam 1992–The Harshad Mehta Story, according to a report in Mumbai Mirror. The web series, based on on Debashis Basu and Sucheta Dalal’s best-selling book The Scam, will feature prominent Gujarati actor Pratik Gandhi as the male lead. The series will showcase the exposure of biggest security scam by financial journalist Sucheta Dalal.

Dhanwanthary will portray Dalal while Gandhi will portray the stockbroker Harshad Mehta in the 30-part series that will also feature other real life characters portrayed by actors like Satish Kaushik, Anant Mahadevan, Rajat Kapoor, Nikhil Dwivedi, KK Raina, Lalit Parimoo and many others.

Talking about the project Mehta said, “I said ‘yes’ to this project as soon as Sameer Nair (CEO of Applause Entertainment) told me that Applause has bought the rights of the book. Growing up in the ’80s and ’90s, we all knew Harshad as a fascinating larger than life character, and I am happy to be able to tell his story.”

Pratik Gandhi added, “It’s a wonderful opportunity to be working with the amazing team at Applause. and a creative maestro like Hansal Mehta. The audience will have a great time figuring if the real Harshad Mehta was a hero or a villain.”

Shreya Dhanwanthary said, “To get the opportunity to play Sucheta Dalal, one of India’s top financial journalists and Padma Shri recipients, has been my privilege. I honestly cannot wait for the audience to witness the exciting world of the stock and money markets.”

The book has been adapted by screenplay writers writers Sumit Purohit, Saurav Dey, Vaibhav Vishal and Karan Vyas. Produced by Studio Next, Scam 1992–The Harshad Mehta Story is being created by Applause Entertainment, the content studio from the Aditya Birla Group.
