American actor Rene Auberjonois passed away on Sunday at his home in Los Angeles. He was 79 years old and was suffering from metastatic lung cancer, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The actor was mostly known for playing character roles in theater plays, films and television series in a career spanning nearly four decades. He played Odo in the science fiction television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.
Auberjonois gained attention for playing the role of military cleric John Mulcahy in the 1970 black comedy war film MASH, which was also his first major film role.
His last role was in Cortex which has not been released yet. His last release was the comedy film Raising Buchanan, where he played the role of President James Buchanan.
The actor was nominated for Tony Award for 1973’s The Good Doctor, 1984’s Big River and 1989’s City of Angels.
In the later part of his career, the Star Trek actor started lending his voice for various animation films like Disney’s 1989 film The Little Mermaid, where he voiced chef Louis. He was also a regular character on ABC’s dramedy series Boston Legal from 2004 to 2008.
Auberjonois was survived by his wife Judith Helen Mihalyi and their two children, Tessa and Remy. The latter is also an actor.
