Thappad was one of the best films to come out in 2020. The Taapsee Pannu and Pavail Gulati starrer was though misinterpreted by most of the viewers. But it is a film which you cannot judge until you watch and experience it. People went on to judge the film based on it’s trailer and hence it received a lot of hatred but this Anubhav Sinha film is a finely crafted masterpiece.

On my rewatch of Thappad, I am presenting you with some of the best story arcs from the film and why the film is a true piece of art according to me.

Check it out:

Social Empowerment and Not Women Empowerment

The film right from the release of it’s trailer was named as a film empowering women or film based on violence against women. But talking about the story truly, it is not just about violence but it’s about the mindset of the society. The film is about Social Empowerment. It’s about Amrita’s (Taapsee Pannu) dignity which was broken by the man she loved and for whom she sacrificed her dreams.

Here ‘Thappad’ is a Metaphor

Thappad here didn’t mean to be just a slap but it was a metaphor to the sense of entitlement, the patriarchy. It painted an accurate portrait of the attitude of the society: Hota Hai, Chalta Hai, Move On! which was actually the ‘Thappad’ for Amrita.

The Deserving Matter

Things would’ve been very different if Vikram would’ve apologized to her right after the shattering incident. But if you notice, he never ever apologized Amrita which was the real reason for her breakdown. And at the Climax, he finally says sorry and tells her, “Next time I’ll earn you.” That is where her decision actually won as that was the end of a mindset.

The film received the hatred but it makes sense as every fine art of this world goes through the phase of hatred at the beginning.
