The ‘Need for an Identity’ arc in Arati Kadav’s sci-fi film Cargo

A still from Cargo

We are highly driven by our sense of identity, of who we are. There comes a point in our life when we figure out the importance of our sense of individual self. Then we categorize ourselves in terms of the world, people, and other groups. Arati Kadav’s ‘Cargo,’ a sci-fi film which is deeply rooted in the divine cycle of life as it presents us with different stories, apart from that of the main leads, clearly giving us an overview of different perspectives of the world.

One of my favorite scenes from the film is when Yuvishka (Shweta Tripathi) narrates her story of becoming an astronaut. That’s where the subtle point of Identity is highlighted in the film through the sense of social comparison, which all of us are busy doing right now through our social media handles.

Apart from that theme, creative sci-fi writing will definitely earn the film a cult status in the future. The references from mythology have been adapted, creating space stations, characters, etc is quite interesting. The habit of solitary and peaceful life in the future is a mere possibility that is portrayed through Prahasta’s (Vikrant Massey) character. The concept of after-life is not that deeply explored in Indian Cinema, but Cargo has definitely created a new wave and will act as an inspiration.

The film is not focusing on just a single theme, the motives are different which are highlighted through different lives, showing us different views of the world we live in. In the end, what do we hide? and what do we lose?
