American actor Tom Hanks was honoured with the lifetime achievement award at the 77th Golden Globe awards on Sunday (5th January), as reported by Variety

The Cecil B. DeMille Award was bestowed to the 63 year old actor for his 30 years long career in the film industry. He was also nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture for his role as the children’s television presenter Mister Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood

Hanks started his award acceptance speech by joking about his early career in the 1970s TV comedy The Love Boat. He said that he had a bad cold that had made him particularly emotional. The Saving Private Ryan actor thanked his wife, Rita Wilson, and five children before acknowledging a long list of actors and directors with whom he has worked and said that they had contributed to his long success.

Hanks is the recipient of the Oscars and Golden Globes in 1994 and 1995 for his roles in Philadelphia and Forrest Gump respectively. He has also won a Screen Actors Guild Award and a People’s Choice Award for the latter film.

The Cecil B. DeMille award is given every year by the Golden Globe organizers the Hollywood Foreign Press Association to an actor, director or a producer who has made a lasting impact on the film industry. Meryl Streep, Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Jeff Bridges and Harrison Ford are some of the past recipients.
