Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” was one of the singles of the year that clearly went on and out throughout the world. It even broke the record for the most time spent in the Billboard Hot 100 top 10 recap: 33 weeks. Now on Monday morning Ed Sheeran took home the best pop solo performance Grammy for this very hit. He also won the Grammy for However everything didn’t seem so “perfect” when the internet took over. But Twitter wasn’t exactly happy about it.

Bagging the two trophies came out as a surprise as his competitors were stars Lady Gaga, Kesha, Kelly Clarkson and Pink with Sheeran being the only male artist on the list. The names of the nominees really ticked off the people as they all had provided such resounding, strong, and powerful tracks.

People reported: “There were sounds of disappointment with slight boos from the audience when Ed Sheeran won for pop vocal performance over Kelly Clarkson, Pink, Lady Gaga and Kesha.”

His acceptance speech was pretty much through an Instagram post where he was quoted saying: “Woke up to the news I won two Grammys last night. Thank you!”

Even though it was not exactly fair that some of the anger was directed at the singer rather than the music industry itself, Ed Sheeran didn’t help matters as was he not only at the ceremony unlike all of his fellow nominees but admitted that he was asleep while the much-deserved women ran the show.

And of course the tweets just kept flooding in:

Naturally, Ed Sheeran wins with a Sia/TLC rip-off over four deserving women who all sang their faces off. #Grammys

Ed Sheeran won a Grammy. Talent never wins. And I know one thing, miss Kesha, and Gaga deserved those Grammys because they tried something new, they created Art, they had difficult times with their careers and lives but still managed to give us Masterpiece. #Grammys

Kesha really did go through hell and back to release Praying and get nominated for a Grammy, only to lose to an Ed Sheeran song about how he likes a woman’s body over a Sia sample #GRAMMYs

Lady Gaga wrote Million Reasons in a healing process to recover from a severe heartbreak. Kesha wrote Praying after being through her literal worst nightmare. Ed Sheeran wrote Shape Of You about a club girl he was horny for. Congratulations Recording Academy. Thank you for this.

If there’s one song that truly deserved the award, it was “Praying” — Kesha’s powerful ballad on her battle with sexual abuse. But Kesha wasn’t one to take it sitting down. Backed by Cyndi Lauper, Bebe Rexha, Julia Michaels, Camila Cabello and Andra Day — all clad in white — Kesha delivered a bone-chilling live performance of “Praying” at the very stage which failed her.Kesha’s emotionally-charged performance received a standing ovation from the entire room as she burst into tears, which goes to show that the importance of real art is already learned.

In the end, this clearly might not have been what the British singer and songwriter was looking for. He has been lucky in his personal life, too. As previously reported, he proposed to his longtime girlfriend, Cherry Seaborn, over the holidays and are now engaged.

The 60th annual Grammy Awards, hosted by James Corden, was held at the Madison Square Garden in New York City.
