Despite Veere Di Wedding receiving fairly positive reviews in India, the movie was banned from airing in Pakistan the very next day after its release due to excessive vulgarity. In reference to this development, Veere Di Wedding actor Swara Bhaskar gave a statement during an interview with film critic Rajeev Masand, where she said that Pakistan was a ‘failing state’, and such a non-secular state which was run by Sharia Laws was in no position to judge a film’s worth.

In response to this blatant accusation, Pakistani actress Urwa Hocane took to Twitter to publicly point out everything wrong with Bhaskar’s statement. Hocane posted three tweets in quick succession on the 3rd of June where she highlighted all the political and social incorrectness of Swara Bhaskar’s opinion. Urwa began with bringing up the fact that Swara herself had referred to Pakistan as the best country she had ever visited back in 2015. Calling a much more developed and accepting Pakistan a ‘failing state’ was downright hypocritical of her.

Hocane also delivered a much more personal blow to the Indian mindset referring back to when the CBFC almost banned the women empowering movie Padmaavat; the movie had only been released after much altercation and alterations, and therefore blaming Pakistan for not releasing Veere Di Wedding due to patriarchal intentions was a failing argument on Swara’s side.

Urwa Hocane finally wrapped up her argument by stating the fact that the way Swara Bhaskar delivered her statement did not convince her fans to look at Pakistan as a failing state, but rather demarcated herself as a ‘Failing Human Being’ who was blatantly ignorant and quite racist. Hocane finally signed out of her critical analysis session by concluding with the statement “From the citizen of the Phenomenal Pakistan” added at the end of her tweet.
