Judwaa 2 movie review: Varun Dhawan has big shoes to fill!

Director David Dhawan‘s most-awaited action-comedy movie ‘Judwaa 2 has finally got released today. The movie which is directed by David Dhawan, produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, and written by Sajid Farhad. The movie features Varun Dhawan in a double role as estranged twins opposite Jacqueline Fernandez and Taapsee Pannu. ‘Judwaa 2’ is a sequel to David Dhawan’s 1997 film Judwaa.

The movie ‘Judwaa 2’ begins up with a predictable introduction where a couple is expecting their child and the mother goes into a labour pain and the father was on his way back from the airport and she finally gives birth to two twins and then the doctor told the couple that their babies are conjoined and they have to separate them from each other and this usually happens one in a million case and then the doctor says that with this we are expecting the drama to begin.

However, the father meets at the airport and follows him back to the hospital and in all this tussle he ends up stealing one of the babies. The story of the movie was a pretty much same to the original one. All of this reboot is peppered with the Salman Khan’s movie ‘Judwaa’, but there is a lot of difference between the Varun Dhawan’s entry. Then the main twist comes in the movie when one of the twins goes to London with the couple and the other one left behind in Mumbai as an orphan. This is the reason one character of Varun is rowdy with tight jeans and the other character in the movie is very simple and a sweet guy, he likes to play the piano.

The movie will be introducing Prem first the one which is simple and a sweet guy he usually gets bullied in college for being too meek and later Taapsee Pannu enters in his life and help him to answer back to all those bullies and then they form a connection. However, Raja from Mumbai has not been introduced till yet.

While Raja is a sassy, strong and a very popular guy while Prem is just totally opposite of Raja. Prem is weak and often get bullied for being meek. Varun as Raja has taken all the attention away from all the tacky justification and especially when he is dancing on the song titled ‘Chalo Ganpati Bappa Morya’ and after looking at this you all will end up feeling super nostalgic for the 90’s. In the movie, Rajpal Yadav will be seen playing Nandu’s character, while Vivian Bathen plays the antagonist Alex.

Raja’s action sequence in the movie has just shown him strong and amazing. However, the comic timing between Salman Khan and Shakti Kapoor was much better in the previous movie ‘Judwaa’. However, Rajpal’s character is not needed because Varun is enough he needs no one he already has two of himself. The only strong thing about the movie is its strong comedy. However, Varun is naturally funny while all the other actors around him tried very hard to be funny but all of them miss the point.

While Johnny Lever is stealing all the comedy limelight in the movie he has been given the character of Pappu Passport and he helps Raja and Nandu in leaving Mumbai after a flight with Alex. He is been called Pappu Passport because he look’s out for a killer joke involving the Aadhar card.

During the flight, Raja meets Jacqueline Fernandez and he tries hard to flirt with her. Just like Karisma Kapoor in the previous movie same Jacqueline is also very feisty for him however this spark is an evident right from the very beginning and it reminds us of Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt chemistry. Just like the original movie that confusion related to the twins comes and goes as per the convenience. During the flight, Raja starts to feel Jacqueline because Prem is playing Piano in another universe, but this generally happens when the makers deem fit. While on the other Prem has to try little harder to establish a great chemistry with Taapsee.

Now, Raja gets a job at an Indian restaurant in London and now we are expecting the fun to begin any moment. Now, all the four characters (Raja, Prem, Taapsee, Jacqueline) are in one city now. Till now, the comedy has been a bit irregular and we can actually see that Varun is the one who is carrying the movie on his shoulder. Talking about the song in the movie, so far the songs are far better than the film Varun’s both version, Jacqueline, Taapsee shines brightest in the songs. We are actually wondering that there is no music video and once the frivolities are done how the movie will go forward. Varun played the character of Raja effortlessly and he is an embodiment of a lot of the previous character he has played. However, he played his sweet and innocent character with the same ease.

The first half of the movie has actually wasted a lot of time in forcing the comedy down our throat and this has become the biggest flaws of the film. Then Raja gets fired from his restaurant because of this confusion. On the other hand, Prem is very much close to proposing Taapsee because everyone is actually waiting for this only. However, finally, the twists come and both finally meet each other during a fight sequence even Raja has some street thugs. The famous iconic bathroom scene has been had been recreated where Varun’s sharing the same frame but with different urinals.

‘Judwaa 2’ is basically a modern throwback to the 1997 movie. But four of them did not share the frame for too long. The movie gets onto typing up loose ends and the second half of the movie has a very less confusion, but it also loses steam. Thought Varun tried hard to maintain the same space as he did in the beginning but he failed to do that in the second half. The makers of the movie have given a song in the middle which has been shot on the beach of Mauritius to distract us and if was not a foot tapping track we would have been complaining a lot more, but ‘Aa Toh Sahi’ is a fun song.

If you are like one of those who has liked the original movie ‘Judwaa’ then the movie is just a modern update of it. However, the director David Dhawan stayed on his word when he said that the movie would be a reboot and the movie truly is a reboot. In the movie, there is a lot of mindless comedy in the movie and if you are going to watch a movie so you should better leave your mind at home and that would truly help you if you do not find any logic in Judwaa 2.

Varun has carried well his two different personalities in the movie. The writer of the movie, Farhad Sami deserves a more credit rather than anyone else in the movie. However, both the actress have played their roles very well. If you are looking for something deep then should not be watching ‘Judwaa 2’, but in some of the scenes, you have to roll your eyes.
