Many stories come and go through the medium of cinema but few of these stories keep nurturing every passing year. They might be heavily criticized or either ignored completely during its release but they keep on emerging as a masterpiece over the years, soon earning a status of Cult Classic. The same goes with Shekhar Kapur’s 1994 film ‘Bandit Queen’ which is based on the true story of Phoolan Devi, her journey of being an outcast and then ruling the ravines as a Queen of Tragedy.

The Ravines play a crucial character in the film as they witness Phoolan’s journey from the beginning itself. A dense part of the land which seems to be very peaceful but only from a long view, the real-life stories it hides within itself cannot be accessed by everyone as they rule all over the place. The film brings light to one such story which gives you a complex reflection from the mirror.

A still from Bandit Queen

An honest work of cinema, a real story shown without adding the factor of sensationalism which we see nowadays in many films which are biographical dramas. A way of storytelling which makes it a gripping watch and is a brave attempt ever in the Indian Cinema. Seema Biswas played the title role and even after more than 25 years of its release, her performance remains to be the best on-screen portrayal ever by an actor. Somewhere, this film was an inspiration to many films including Article 15 and Sonchiriya.

Many actors whom we know now, this film kick-started their careers including Manoj Bajpayee, Saurabh Shukla, Gajraj Rao, Nirmal Pandey, and Aditya Srivastava.

This film will be remembered forever!
