Cyclone Gaja which has crossed Tamil Nadu wrecked a havoc claiming around 20 lives.The Tamil Nadu CM has announced that the families of the deceased will be provided a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each from the Chief Minister’s Public Relief Fund (CMPRF).

The state disaster management authority had released an animated video to create awareness on the do’s and don’ts during the cyclone. The helpline numbers, 1070 (state-level) and 1077 (districts) have also been announced .

Over 80,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas and have been moved into more than 470 relief centers in six districts, and fishermen were warned to stay away from the sea.

The strong winds have damaged several thatched houses and uprooted many trees and electric poles in Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur, Thanjavur and Pudukkottai districts affecting the power supply which may take atleast 2 more days to be restored. Traffic was affected on the Nagore-Nagapattinam road as several uprooted trees lay on the road.Mobile communication network was disrupted in Nagapattinam district.
