The Kejriwal-led AAP government in Delhi on Tuesday has released a draft electric vehicles(EV) policy for the national capital. The objective is to turn 25 percent of all new vehicle registrations into electric by 2023 by subsidizing such autos, rickshaws and two wheelers.

According to Kailash Gahlot, Transport Minister of Delhi, “Around 30% of Delhi’s Particulate Matter pollution in winters is due to the vehicles and this move to switch towards zero-emission EVs will drastically lessen the air-pollution in the capital.” (Read here)

The proposal includes that by 2023 all the electric vehicles should be completely exempted of road tax, registration fee and parking charges.

The other recommendations involve effective strengthening of infrastructure to provide battery charging facility within 3 km range from anywhere in Delhi. Also the proceedings from the non-electric vehicles will be directed to the corpus to further provide incentives to the electric vehicles. The draft policy has been posted on the website of Transport department to invite objections, suggestions and remarks from the people.

A subsidy up to Rs 22,000 is proposed on purchase of e-two wheelers so that the commuting cost falls close to the two wheelers which are petrol-driven.
