Standing in front of your wardrobe and finding absolutely nothing to wear. All of this, inspite of your wardrobe being just too messed up with the number of clothes that are added to it every month. A scene that you’re just too familiar with?

Well, the woman species is known to ‘never have enough clothes’. So much so that she wouldn’t be happy even with a  walk-in closet.

Bindiya Chotrani, woman-to-woman, knows how much of a necessity it is to be well dressed at all times. Here are a few wardrobe staples she suggests every women have, in order to take onto that no-nonsense world.

Little Black Dress
The LBD is cliché for a reason. It’s in the wardrobe for a reason too. Just like classic Black Pumps, Pearl Earrings or even a classic white button-up blouse, the LBD transcends time and fashions and so is really an essential to any girl’s closet. While you may just love other colors on you, you just cannot deny the fact that the classic, beautiful elegance of the Little Black Dress transforms you the moment you slip it on. Whether you are petite or broad, tall or short the LBD comes in many different styles that will suit any shape or form. Choose from short and sassy cocktail dresses and flirty party dresses.

Imagine you haven’t dressed for ages and a friend suggests a last minute dinner. You are lacking a little confidence since you haven’t dressed for so long, you have put on a few extra pounds over the winter and as you rummage in the back of the closet you are doubting yourself when out of the corner of your eye you spot the LBD hanging there like a best friend.

White button down shirt
Ask not what you can do for your white button down shirt, but instead what it can do for you? Need to impress a business client, or want to get the best out of your vendor? Then a white button down shirt is THE thing for you. Why restrict that white shirt to business meetings though? Need to go for a formal dinner, or a chic girl’s night out there’s nothing that is more apt for the occasion than a white button down shirt. Up that quotient of the white shirt with a scarf and you are good to go. Though we suggest you pick up one size bigger if you want to save yourself the embarrassment cause by the awkward pulling and gaps around your chest.

Pair it with a pencil skirt, choose denim shorts, or maybe a pair of dark wash jeans, the white shirt is the most versatile item in your wardrobe.

Black Blazer
Make that simple dress look classic by teaming it up with a black blazer. Wear it over a skirt, or maybe pants.  Add a favorite pin to the lapel if you want to jazz it up. Work that sexy “woman with a mission” look by wearing it over a slim fit shirt with a pair of skinny black pants or simply throw it over a striped top for Parisian chic. Nothing can make you look more no-nonsense than a black blazer.

Now while the blazer need not be ridiculously expensive or high-end, it does need to fit you perfectly and work with your body type. If you want to appear taller or longer, choose a blazer that’s longer. If you want to accentuate your beautiful waistline, make sure it’s fitted in the waist area. Also make sure it’s current. Avoid one that looks like something from the 80s — oversized with enormous shoulder pads.

Black trousers
A sleek pair of black trousers with a flattering fit not only transcends trends, it is a master of multitasking

A pair of high-quality, flat front, black trousers are a necessity in every wardrobe. Stay away from pleats because they only accentuate an area that no one really needs accentuating! If you can buy only one pair of trousers, select a length that matches the heel height you most commonly wear. And choose a lightweight wool that will work in summer or winter.

A scarf
Think of that scarf as just more than a sheath for the cold.  In fact, in recent years, scarves have evolved into year-round accessory essentials. Infinity, silk, knit, lace – the options are endless. Instead of a necklace, try a soft loop of bright fabric to perk up a mundane outfit instantly. It’s a fun and simple way to mix prints. Ditch the sock-hop square knot and go for a loose wrap-around look, or twist before knotting for an easy yet fancy look. Voila, there’s oomph to a simple outfit.

Dark wash jeans
The list wouldn’t be complete without this item on it. Dress up or down depending on how you choose to put on those jeans. Though we suggest you opt for the skinny type of jeans, because the flared and the bootcut are just too passé. A dark washed blue jeans and a white tee – just perfect for every informal occasion you can think of.

Need to dress up but wish you could be comfortable at the same time. A chiffon top, ballet fats or heels and the dark wash jeans are your go-to for such times. Look for styles with no fading or embellishments, and have them hemmed to perfectly hit the bottom of your heel.

So spruce up your closet without dropping big bucks on trends that will be over before you get your money’s worth. And instead focus on creating a smart core wardrobe with basics that will last forever.
