It originated in the district of Pratpagarh of Rajasthan but has always been a part of Pink City’s cultural heritage. Its existence can be dated back to 400 years, during the Mughal period. The intricately patterned ornaments got the keen interest of the royals at that time and the artisans were bestowed the title of ‘Rajsoni’. With the advent of the British rule, it also established itself in the Victorian market.

The traditional design that can be seen on the Thewa pieces is shaped with much delicacy and skill. Not only does it need expertise in the art but almost a month’s time to finish each piece. The handiwork basically involves the embossing of gold sheets on colored glass material. When the working surface is ready, different designs are carved onto it, usually done with a free hand. After this the excessive gold is removed and the piece maybe encased.

The patterns that are engraved on Thewa ornaments are also what make it so distinctive. The designs range from mythological characters to mughal court scenes and from representations of historical events to flowers. Most of the embellished pieces that are sold have some significant religious entity. The designs also incorporate birds, nature related creations which have been finding their way through urban regalia. The glass pieces that give the Thewa pieces their shine and shimmer can be made of precious gemstones like ruby, sapphire or emerald that makes them a luxurious form of jewelry.
