The 54th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), in collaboration with UNICEF, is showcasing a selection of five films that delve into the critical realm of child rights. This initiative aims to raise awareness and spark meaningful conversations about the importance of safeguarding children’s well-being.
Two of the featured films hail from India: the National Award-winning Bengali film “Damu,” directed by Raja Sen, and the Gujarati film “Gandhi & Co.,” directed by Manish Saini. “Damu” chronicles the heartwarming story of an orphaned boy sheltered and raised by a compassionate man, while “Gandhi & Co.” follows the mischievous adventures of two young boys.
Three films from Iran and Sri Lanka complete the lineup: “For the Sake of Ava,” directed by Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Seraji, revolves around an Iranian theatre group facing passport challenges due to the mixed heritage of their lead actress. “Peacock Lament,” directed by Sanjeewa Pushpakumara, is a Sinhalese film that explores the complexities of childhood in the aftermath of a devastating civil war. Rounding off the international selection is “Singo,” directed by Alireza Mohammadi Rouzbahany, a Persian film that delves into the challenges faced by children living in poverty.
These films collectively reflect on the dynamic forces that shape childhood and examine the socio-economic contexts that influence children’s lives. The partnership between UNICEF and the National Film Development Corporation (NFDC), the organizer of IFFI, underscores their commitment to using the power of cinema to advocate for child rights.
This collaboration aims to promote positive portrayals of children in films, while also drawing attention to the detrimental effects of violence against children, adolescents, and women. The partnership extends beyond film screenings, encompassing workshops and seminars that engage industry professionals and the general public in discussions about child rights.
The IFFI-UNICEF partnership exemplifies the transformative potential of cinema to raise awareness, foster empathy, and inspire action towards protecting the rights of every child.
