Apple AirPower

Apple made promises about the release of AirPower in 2018– the company’s first wireless charging mat, but for some unexplained reason, the release got delayed. Nevertheless, according to recent rumors, Apple has finally put the AirPower into production and it might see the light of the day later this year.

A tweet by Chargelab reveals that the manufacturer Luxshare Precision, who also makes Apple’s AirPods and USB-C cables, has finally started producing Apple’s charging mat and they have gained this piece of information from a credible source in the supply chain. The news was originally reported by MacRumors.

ChargeLab followed that tweet with another one which stated that the Taiwanese electronics manufacturer, Pegatron, will also be working on mass producing the AirPower from January 21. The tweet adds that a company employee has informed ChargeLab that the AirPower will have a total of three coils in “8-7-7 configuration” from bottom to top.

Steve Troughton-Smith, a developer who focuses mainly on writing iPhone software, also tweeted that he came to the news of Apple tackling the issue they were having with AirPower, which gives more credence to the recent reports.

The AirPower was having overheating issues, according to tipster Sonny Dickson, who claimed due to overcharging issues of the AirPower, Apple’s custom charging chip was effected preventing it from working properly. The fact that the charging mat is supposed to power more than one devices at once had been causing problems in the production for Apple.

Apple revealed the AirPower during the iPhone launch event back in September 2017. Apple made promises about making the charging mat available by 2018. It was next rumored to release in March 2018, but that did not happen. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who is a respected Apple watcher, claimed the delay in the release has been because of the challenging nature of manufacturing the charging mat.

After the iPhone XS Max launch last year, a mention of the charging mat was spotted in a getting started guide and iOS 12.1 code, however, it has been months since then and there hasn’t been any news regarding the release, until now. The AirPower missed its release date in 2018 and Apple did not choose to make any comments about the delay.

If the new reports are to be believed, Apple might have finally figured out to tackle the problem that has been persisting in the production. AirPower is widely being expected from Apple enthusiast all over the world and it looks like Apple might quench the thirst by the end of this year.
