Apple added support for dual SIM connectivity with the launch of iPhone XS in 2018 and this was possible because of the eSIM feature. The feature allows users to use one physical SIM and a digital SIM for connectivity.

Apple kept the eSIM feature for iPhones launched in 2018 and the newly launched iPhone 12 models which are the first ones to have support for 5G connectivity and dual SIM connectivity.

5G connectivity is not yet available for dual SIM mode on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro and the internal training documents of Apple employees shared on Reddit and MacRumors confirmed it to be authentic.

The document of the company says that while using two lines in dual SIM mode, 5G data is not supported on any one of them and falls back to 4G LTE. If customers are using the facility of eSIM and are using a 5G supported carrier and service plan, they would get 5G access.

The company has now planned to enable 5G support in dual SIM mode via a software update later this year. Till that time, users of eSIM have to remove the physical SIM from their phones to access the 5G network.

Apple iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are now available for pre-orders and shipments might start from this week. Another two models in this lineup includes iPhone 12 Mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max which customers would be able to pre-order from this week and shipments will start from 6th November.
