Apple iPhone sales were down by 20% on a yearly basis in November 2018, according to number shared by Counterpoint research. The research mentioned that the iPhone XR was the best selling iPhone model this year. These numbers are out when Apple has cut down expectations on the first quarter 2019(October to December 2018) revenue.
The research from Counterpoint state that the sales of the new iPhones: iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and the iPhone XR were down by 20% compared to the sale of iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X in 2017.
iPhone XR was the best selling model from Apple in 2018. However, compared to the sales of iPhone X, which was pricier than iPhone XR, the iPhone XR was 50% lower in sales.
According to Apple, their inability to meet expected revenues could be blamed on China as the sales of iPhones fall drastically in the world’s most important smartphone market. A lack of upgrades in more advanced markets has also resulted in Apple’s downfall.
Shobhit Srivasta, a Counterpoint analyst, noted in his blog that the iPhone sales were impacted due to slower sales in the Asia Pacific region, Europe, and the U.S. This bit doesn’t involve China and India, where Apple has also struggled to sell their phones.
One of the most prominent reasons for the decline in sales of the iPhones, as is pointed out by other analysts, is the pricing strategy of Apple. The Counterpoint data shows that the iPhone XR out-sold both the iPhone XS and XS Max. The 64 GB variant, which is the lowest priced iPhone, was sold the most. iPhone XR itself is the cheaper variant of the iPhone and it’s 64 GB variant is the cheapest new iPhone one could buy.
Apple itself has affirmed that the iPhone XR is its best selling model, even though the XR was released a month after the release of the XS and XS Max.
Nevertheless, The Counterpoint data show that the iPhone 8 was sold 5% more than the iPhone XR. Both the phones are the cheapest iPhones of their respective line-up. The iPhone 8 managed to outsell the XR even though the new XR comes with a new design, Face ID, and a ton of new features.
The biggest iPhone Apple had to offer, that is the iPhone XS Max, fared the worst sales. When compared to last year’s iPhone X, Counterpoint notes a decline of 46% sales with the XS Max.
Counterpoint also notes that the XR will keep outselling its bigger counterparts because of its lower price.
