Apple’s ‘batterygate’ saga might take a turn back to the way to the year 2017, but the organisation will be still looking forward to this as  it is one of the past thing by doling out payments to users whose iPhones were targeted by battery-draining software updates. In March 2020, the company said it would make reparations to the tune of $500 million to consumers as a part of the settlement,  eligible iPhone owners who are facing such issues can now apply for the same.

Under the scheme, all the Apple users will be eligible for payment,  who currently own or have previously owned an iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus or an iPhone SE which ran iOS 10.2.1 or later versions before December 21, 2017 . The company also stated that users must also have experienced “diminished performance” on the iPhones. As per the website quoted by MacRumours  it has been stated that “Apple will provide a cash payment of approximately $25 per eligible device”.

Depending upon the choice, the users can opt out from the settlement. The users could refrain from filing a claim if they wish to sue Apple said  The Verge. Until October 6, 2020 the window for filing claims is open. The processing of payments will be done after December 4, followed by the signing off of judge on the settlement.

In the year 2017, the issue stems to user complaints  that the batteries of the iPhones were being throttled followed by a update of software. Apple said  that it deliberately slowed down older phones with different aging batteries to prevent crashes of app and unexpected shutdowns. As the immediate action, the company took a quick action and slashed the price of out-of-warranty battery replacement by $50, from $79 to $29.

The advantage of the discount was taken by nearly 11 million iPhone owners, including those in India. For the users in the United States, they have the  settlement payments  it remains to be seen if affected parties in other markets.
