Nintendo Switch

Nintendo’s vastly rumored budget Nintendo Switch or Switch Mini has apparently been set for a release for the Fall season of this year. According to a Japanese newspaper Nikkei, this particular Nintendo Switch variant will be released during the Fall of this year. There have been various rumors that the budget Nintendo Switch would not work with a TV, however, the Japanese publication reports otherwise. Moreover, the report adds that the Nintendo Switch Pro will be releasing soon after the release of the budget Nintendo Switch.

In terms of specifications, the report claims that Nintendo Switch Pro would not be a major upgrade to its predecessor, as far as performance is concerned, but would still serve as an upgrade over the existing console.

Nintendo has still not announced a more powerful Nintendo Switch or a budget variant, nevertheless, with its latest update, the company may have indicated at the possibility of a new version of its hybrid console. The Nintendo Switch System Update 8.0.0 allows users to transfer system data for individual games between consoles. Considering that this process would erase the saved data on the source system after the transfer, it could mean that the company has added this feature to accommodate the possibility of Nintendo Switch owners upgrading to two rumored addition to the Switch family: Nintendo Mini and Nintendo Pro.

Nintendo is currently preparing to launch two new Switch consoles–a budget version which will cater to the casual audience and a Pro variant which will facilitate the gaming requirements of hardcore gamers. Apparently, both the upcoming consoles would bear key differences when compared to the currently existing Switch console.

According to rumors, the budget Nintendo Switch will not work with a TV in docked mode. It is reported to be restricted to hand-hold use only, which is kind of odd considering one of the Switch’s selling point was that it could be used everywhere, TVs included. Moreover, the Switch Pro may not be as powerful as is expected by the users, it could possibly be an incremental upgrade as it was from the 3DS to the New 3DS.

The source of the latest rumor is Eurogamer, which has a great track record of reporting on what to expect from Nintendo, leading up to the release of the Switch and past Pokemon titles.

“But an even bigger change appears to be on the cards, as several people familiar with Nintendo’s current plans have told me the company has designed its budget Switch for an audience which uses it in handheld mode only,” writes Eurogamer’s Tom Phillips.

“Will you still be able to connect this new budget Switch to a screen, even if via some kind of additional peripheral? It feels a huge switch from the console’s MO – its name, even – to drop the docking feature, but it’s a change of the same magnitude we have seen Nintendo explore before. With 2DS, Nintendo ripped out the 3DS’ title feature to drive down price – and there was no workaround for that.”

Talking about the Pro variant of the Nintendo Switch, Phillips says he’s “heard the bump will be comparable to the one received by the 3DS upon its New 3DS relaunch. And, finally, there’s no suggestion this model might remove the TV screen docking.”
