The end of Microsoft’s Windows phones is here: everything you need to know

It is a well-known fact that Windows phones are obsolete now and with the recent recommendation from Microsoft suggesting Windows phone users switch to Android or iOS as soon as possible has all but confirmed the démodé status of the Windows phones.

In a recent end-of-support FAQ page, Microsoft has asked Windows phone users to shift to Android or iOS soon. The FAQ page notes that the support will end on June 11, 2019, and “security updates, non-security hotfixes, free assisted support options, or online technical content updates from Microsoft” will end on December 10, 2019. In simple words, Microsoft has decided to cut all support for Windows phones.

Here is a guide for Windows phone users looking to transfer their data to Android or iOS:

Windows to iOS

Open the settings app on your iOS device
Go to Passwords and Account option
Tap on Add Account
Choose Outlook.com and log into it
Once the account is added, turn on the syncing of all the data that you would like to transfer to your iPhone
Now, tap on the Accounts option at the top left corner and go back to the Accounts screen
Now you have to turn on the switch next to Mail in order to sync your e-mail data. Likewise turn on the switch next to Calendar, Notes, and Contacts to transfer the data on iOS.
In order to transfer the photos from Windows phone to iPhone, upload all your photos to the OneDrive app. Download the OneDrive app on your iOS device and log in and then download the photos that you have uploaded to your iOS device.

Windows to Android

First up, sync all your data including contacts and email to your Google account.
Take the backup of your data and sync everything with your Outlook account
Go to the phone’s settings on your Windows device
Select Email+Accounts
Tap on outlook.com and enter your username and password.
now open the email Settings page and tap on Sync Settings option
You can choose to sync emails, contacts and calendar
Now go to the settings on your Android smartphone and tap on the Account option and click on Add Account.
Now, enter your Microsoft email and password, once done you will be asked to set up your account.
Click on the option to Sync Contacts and Sync Calendars
In terms of photos, there are various options for transferring. You could either manually transfer the data through your desktop using a micro-USB cable or you could opt for ShareIt app that facilitates data transfer over smartphones. Lastly, you can upload your data on OneDrive and then download OneDrive app on your Android device in order to access all the data you uploaded.
