According to a Google spokesperson, Google will no longer be making its own tablets. Google isn’t killing all tablets but it seems like Google is done competing with the rival Apple iPads and is giving up on its tablet business.

In a statement received by Engadget, a Google spokesperson said that “for Google’s first-party hardware efforts, we’ll be focusing on Chrome OS laptops and will continue to support Pixel Slate.”

This news first came from JR Raphael at Computerworld, who writes, “Google had two smaller tablets in the works, both of which have been cancelled. Going along with that, internal resources are being re-allocated to work on laptop hardware going forward.”

However, Google will continue offering support and updates for the Pixel Slate until June 2024, and the Chrome OS team will also continue to focus on tablets and laptops in its software development. Although Google is discontinuing its own tablets, there are other manufacturers who produce Chrome-based tablets.

The Pixel Slate was Google’s first released Chrome OS tablet which worked best when docked with a keyboard and a trackpad. Using it just like a tablet didn’t make a lot of sense and it wasn’t that impactful mainly because the software wasn’t as well-suited to touch as it could have been. But despite today’s news, Google confirms that it’ll continue supporting the Pixel Slate for years to come, and the device is still on sale. For the right buyer, it still might make sense — it has a great screen, solid performance and strong battery life. But going forward, Google’s going to try and build on the success it had with the Pixelbook and let the Slate fade into oblivion
