Google discarded Google Maps from the Apple watch 3 years ago without any clear reasons but now they are back on it.

Google made two announcements about Google Maps for Apple platforms. First, Google’s app now works with the dashboard view on CarPlay screens, allowing drivers to see maps and media controls side-by-side. Second, Google is relaunching the Maps app on the Apple Watch, with turn-by-turn directions.

Talking about CarPlay, it was introduced to support iOS with the launch of iOS 13. It could only support Apple Maps. After the release of iOS 13.4, even other developers could take advantage of this feature. CarPlay is a system that links your Apple device’s apps on your Car’s in-built infotainment system. It is similar to Android’s Auto Play.

Today Google has also joined forces in the other developers which support CarPlay. Google’s blog post announced the update, says it should go into effect for all users of CarPlay-supported vehicles today.

Google withdrew the Maps app from Apple watch 3 years ago but now they are back on it. It was more of an extension of the iOS maps. You won’t get it straight away from today. You have to wait for a few weeks.

This app will give you end to end directions, be it walking, cycling, vehicle, or public transportation. You can get directions to places you’ve previously saved, like the places you’ve set as your home or your workplace. To go somewhere you haven’t previously saved, you’ll have to start the process on your phone.

Not only Google maps but a lot of other companies withdrew their apps at that time including Amazon. At that time users would have to initiate Watch App downloads from the iPhone. Now Apple has a separate app store for the Apple watch.
