Huawei Mate X

Huawei is doubling down on its foldable smartphone technology as the company’s Consumer Business Group CEO, Richard Yu, revealed its short-term expectations for the new device format.

Since the foldable format is quite new now, Huawei will be focusing on its latest device in that particular segment, Huawei Mate X, which is slated to go on sale in June. Huawei Mate X, as openly admitted by the company, is an expensive device, however, as more and more foldable devices are manufactured, Huawei is expecting to lower the prices on the foldable devices. In fact, in about a two year of time, Huawei will be selling its foldable smartphones at a price of regular devices.

The gradual price drop of the foldable smartphones would be an effective result of Huawei producing more foldable smartphones by 2021. Huawei could manufacture half of its flagship smartphones in the form of foldable smartphone, one of which will be a compact device, which will be smaller than both Huawei Mate 20 Pro and Huawei P30 Pro.

With the amount of focus that Huawei is applying on foldable devices, it is clear that Huawei is betting on flexibility in smartphones as the future of technology. However, the company also admits that not everyone will be interested in folding form-factor of smartphones and some will prefer the traditional smartphones. This indicates that the regular devices like we have in our hands now will be sticking around for quite some time before they are eliminated as obsolete.

Meanwhile, Huawei is also reportedly working on a new processor named Kirin 985 offering a 7nm EUV design (reportedly marketed as 7nm+). The company is using Extreme ultraviolet lithography (EUV) as a key manufacturing method that is expected to be the foundation for future, smaller chip design.

The China Times also reported that the device using Huawei’s HiSilicon hardware account for the company’s 45 percent of all the company’s current phones. But it is speculated that the company is aiming at 60 percent by the second half of this year.
