Microsoft seems to be experimenting with prototype Xbox controllers for smartphones and tablets. The controllers will attach to the sides of these devices and provide an experience that’s similar to Nintendo’s Switch. “The success of the Switch is testament to the value of mobile gaming with physical controls,” explains a Microsoft Research paper, spotted by Windows Central.

“As smartphones and tablets have become pervasive, so has mobile gaming. Not surprisingly, popular games for these platforms are focused on touchscreen-based interaction. However, many types of game are less well-suited to mobile devices,” a Microsoft Research paper outlines.

“Mobile gaming devices like the Sony PlayStation Portable and Nintendo’s DS and Switch are dedicated mobile gaming platforms which overcome these limitations via physical controls. The success of the Switch is testament to the value of mobile gaming with physical controls” the paper continues.

With the recent success of the Nintendo Switch and Sony’s self-removal from the world of handheld consoles, Xbox may presumably be able to take their place even if it’s through mobile game streaming.

However, these controllers do make sense since gamers have long argued that touch controls limit the amount of precision a user can offer to any player, despite the fact how intuitive they are. With a high-quality controller add-on provided by Microsoft, this could be a worthwhile alternative to some of the other controllers available for Android and IOS.
