Samsung has been lagging behind in terms of sales compared to other smartphone manufacturers from China like Xiaomi. The South-Korean company has had crummy sales in the last two of the three quarters of 2018, according to research by Counterpoint.

Samsung is planning to launch its budget smartphone series in India this year which will be only available through Amazon and the company’s own online store. The new budget smartphone lineup from Samsung, called the M-series, will help the company double its online sales, Asim Warsi, the head of Samsung’s Indian Mobile Business told Reuters.

“The M series has been built around and incepted around Indian millennial consumers,”  said Asim Warsi, adding that the M-series will be available globally after its launch in India at the end of January.

He declined to give more details but said that online sales account for a double-digit percentage of the overall mobile phone revenue.

Samsung’s mobile phone sales in India has touched ₹373.5 billion in the 12 months to end March 2018, according to regulatory filings sourced by paper.vc, a business intelligence platform.

The India-made phones which will be available under the price bracket of ₹10000-₹20000 will feature bigger batteries and other features such as quick charging, Warsi said.

Samsung has been paying attention to the Indian market, home to more than a billion wireless subscribers and where more than 350 million users still don’t use smartphones.

Last year Samsung opened what it claimed to be the world’s biggest mobile phone manufacturing plant on the outskirts of the Indian capital New Delhi and the biggest mobile phone store globally in Bengaluru.

“A lot of our insights, R&D and developments for consumers in India … they have great connect with many other consumers in many other parts of the world,” Warsi said.

Samsung currently has 250,000 retail outlets and more than 2,000 exclusive stores in India, with support offered by 2000 service centers.
