Establishing the base for 5nm-sized A14 chips in 2020 iPhones, TSMC has announced the release of its complete 5nm chip design infrastructure.

TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company) has been making the A-series chipset for iPhones since 2016 and the new 5nm chip is expected to be called A14. That means the new chipset can be seen on 2020 iPhone models. TSMC has manufactured the A10 Fusion, A11 Bionic, and A12 Bionic chipset for Apple.

The company said in a statement that “the 5 nm process enjoys the benefits of process simplification provided by EUV lithography and is making excellent progress in yield learning, achieving the best technology maturity at the same corresponding stage as compared to TSMC’s previous nodes.”

TSMC is expected to invest above $20 million in the mass production of the A14 5nm chipset, according to a report by Gizmochina. This years iPhones, however, will come with the A13 chipsets that will be based on the 7nm manufacturing process.

Apple iPhones are one of the fastest and best-performing devices in the market, which has can be attributed to the chipset that the devices run on. The A-series chipset from Apple give tough competition to its Snapdragon counterparts and with the 5nm A14 chipset coming in, Apple might take the lead in the smartphone market for the manufacturing of best-performing smartphones.

Moreover, Apple recently announced that its contract manufacturer Wistron has started producing iPhone 7 in India. Now, it looks like Apple is moving a step further and including the production of flagship iPhones in the country. According to a new report, Apple’s other contract manufacturer Foxconn will start assembling latest iPhones in Chennai on a trial basis. Wistron already produces older iPhones such as iPhone 6SiPhone SE in Bangalore.

With flagship iPhones being manufactured in India, it is expected to bring the skyrocketing prices of Apple devices a little lower as it would avoid 20 percent import duties, and 30 percent of local sourcing. It would also result in Apple opening more offline stores in the country.
